The BasicsTo perform an effective public record search, we need to know as much as possible about the person or business that you wish to search for (we call the person or business that you wish to search for the "subject"). The information that we need to know about a subject includes the name, street address, city, state, ZIP code, county, phone number, and more.In general, the more information about a subject that we have, the more relevant public record links we can provide. For example, most property records are kept at the county level. If we don't know the street address for the subject, or we don't know the county corresponding to the street address, we can't display links to property records. Listed and Unlisted SubjectsIn many cases, much of the information that we need can be determined automatically based on the subject's listing in public white pages (a.k.a.- the phonebook). If your subject is listed in the phonebook, all you need to provide is the subject's name, city, and state, and we should be able to locate the subject in the phonebook and extract information like street address and phone number from that listing. If you don't know the exact city, try a statewide search by providing only the subject's name and state. In the case where there are multiple listings for a given subject (e.g. - John Smith in California), we will, by default, choose the first listing, and give you the opportunity to view the entire list and choose another listing if you wish.In some cases, even when a subject is listed in the phonebook, that phonebook listing may not include all of the information we need (i.e. - some phonebook listings do not include the street address, and, for some street addresses, we cannot automatically determine the county in which that address lies). In these cases, you can always provide the missing information yourself if you know it. In cases where a subject is not listed the in the phonebook, you'll need to provide as much information yourself as you know (street address, phone number, etc.) in order to get accurate results. Searches by AddressFor searches by address, we attempt to automatically determine the county in which that address lies. If we can't determine the county, you can always provide it yourself to improve the quality of your results.Searches by Phone NumberFor searches by phone number, we also rely on the subject being listed in the phonebook. If the phone number that you supply is unlisted, we won't be able to find the name corresponding to that number. In that case, please use either the Advanced Person or Advanced Business search to provide the information yourself.Look for the Icons! When we display the results, look for the
and icons to the right of the subject
information. These icons alert you to situations where we weren't able to automatically
determine some search information, or there was some ambiguity like multiple
phonebook listing. In these cases, if you provide us with additional information,
we may be able to display more numerous and/or accurate results about your subject.
