Free Public Record Search Engine - Pretrieve

Frequently Asked Questions

"I know there are more free sites out there. Why aren't they built into Pretrieve yet?"

At Pretrieve, we're growing every day! We want to help make Internet researching as easy and productive as possible for our users. We are adding new sources daily in our effort to better serve your information needs, but we need your help. The information resources of the Deep Web are vast, but we're trying to reach all of them for you as quickly as we can. Finding new sites can sometimes be a challenge, so we ask our users to tell us about new sites they have found or sites they visit regularly that they would like to see integrated into Pretrieve. If you would like to suggest a link, please drop us a quick note at linkrequest@pretrieve.com.

"I searched every free site available on the Internet but still couldn't find the answer to my question!"

The information resources of the free web have limitations. Every state, county, and local municipality makes its own decision about what information to make available to the public via the Internet. Some choose not to publish any information on the Internet but will sell complete copies of their public record databases to information companies. These information companies aggregate data from all over the country to build and sell comprehensive database reports.

At Pretrieve, we believe that researchers should utilize both free and paid sources to get the most complete and comprehensive results. Free sources often have more current data, more robust data, and access to certain types of valuable information that database aggregators can't purchase. Aggregate database services typically offer users the ability to perform nationwide indexed searches and access to data that isn't published on the Internet. We encourage our users to click the advertising links as they explore the free site menus of Pretrieve to discover additional information that may be helpful.

"How can I improve my search results?"

Pretrieve's technology attempts to maximize your search results by customizing the search inquiry input for each site in the menu. If the person or business you are researching is not included in the phone directory, you will need to input more data to help Pretrieve bring back the relevant information you are looking for. Generally speaking, the better the input the better the output. This maxim holds especially true if you are performing a search on a common name. Pretrieve's "Advanced Search" functionality provides users with an opportunity to input more search variables to help narrow the search results. Entering an address, a county name, or even a zip code will drastically improve your results.

Nicknames and name abbreviations are typically not handled well by many public record database search routines. We wish this weren't the case, but there is nothing Pretrieve can do to change the way the owners of the information choose to allow people to search. If you encounter problems finding the person or business you are looking for, try using the full name. If that doesn't help, try using just the first letter of the name or maybe just the last name. If you still can't find it, that name is probably not listed in the directory and you'll need to use the advanced search menu to input more data.
